The Flax Project

Welcome to the archive of the ethnographic drawings about the Flax Project CIC.
This project is run by textile designer Vicky Putler, who grows flax near Saltash, Cornwall and has her studio at The Plot in Plymouth. This project was inspired by a farm in Belgium that she visited some years ago in her research for organic linen, which was difficult to get in the UK.
Alongside building a local, small scale, organic flax-to-linen production — an ambitious goal that presents many challenges in the current economic ecosystem — she is actively running workshops to introduce people to this amazing crop, during which people not only learn how to work with the straws, but also rediscover the hidden connection between making and agriculture.

I often forget to say to people that this fibre is how you make linen, I forget that  because it's such a basic thing — and suddenly it comes out in the conversation and: "Ooh, it makes linen!"
