Intro
Hello, I'm Alex Fasoli and I am a designer and illustrator. I am currently doing a research project for my PhD Sustainability in the Making: Craft Programmes for Eco-Social Change. This project investigates how craft initiatives (like workshops, festivals, or gatherings) are promoting and building sustainability behaviours and ecological cultures in Devon and the Southwest.
About this study
As part of my PhD, I am running a study where I join people during those craft initiatives and I draw them while they are making and crafting together, and then I interview them about it.
Invitation to take part
If you are between 16 and 18 years old and you are taking part in a social craft event, I would like to invite you to participate in my study.
What’s involved in taking part in the study?
I will be drawing you and your friends during your class or workshop, and at the end you can tell me all about what you created.
Are there any risks in participating in this study?
There are no particular risks associated to this study.
If I attend a craft event when you are there, do I have to take part in your study?
No. Participation in my study is independent from taking part in your craft workshop/event. Even if I am there as an observant, if you do not want to be part of my study, I will not draw you, nor will I interview you
What do I have to do if I say yes in being part of your study?
If you say yes, all you have to do is carrying on your making
as usual following the lead of your teacher/facilitator. I'll be drawing silently without interrupting.
At the end of the event, if you want, we can have a chat and you can tell me all about your creation and the process behind it. I will record our conversation.
Do I have to tell you my name?
You can decide whether participating in my study with you real name or if you prefer to remain anonymous. You can also opt for a pseudonym.
What kind of drawing will you make?
These are some examples of drawing I made during craft events:

What will you ask me during our chat?
The conversation is focused on your relationship with making and your vision of sustainability. I might ask some questions, like your age, what you know about the environment, or why you decided to join this craft event. You don’t have to answer a question if you don’t feel like it.
What if I don't want to talk anymore?
You can stop our chat at any moment.
Before you go, don't forget to take your little present: a little colouring book with some drawings I made. This is a little present from me to thank you for your participation in my study.
What happens to my data?
Everything you told me and all information you gave me will be kept safe. I will not disclose any confidential information and it will not be included in the dataset of the research.
What if I say yes, and than change my mind?
You can withdraw from the study at any time before, during, and after the event, and within 20 days from the date of the event.
Why should I take part in your study?
environmentally responsible society, and if we can do it through craft. The results will be
valuable for researchers and makers to improve craft programmes and initiatives to promote sustainability behaviours and ecological values in their communities. All results will be published on the website of the research and will be discussed in a final dissertation, presented in conferences, and published in articles or books. Tools and diagrams resulting from this study, as well as the drawings’ collection are open and designed to be accessible to everyone through this website.
More information about this project, its evolution, the methodology and the philosophy of the research are available on this website.
